3 Day – Tracking Gorillas

  • Max: 8 per group
  • Min Age : 12+

There is probably no wildlife experience as intimate as tracking Uganda’s endangered mountain gorillas. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, a UNESCO world heritage site, is home to over half of the remaining mountain gorillas in the world. Your trek may take anything up to six hours, but for one hour you will spend an out of life experience up-close and personal with these cousins of humanity. Believe you me, there is nothing like it when you look into those brown eyes.

Highlights

– Track and spend an hour with a family of the endangered mountain gorillas.
– A hike through one of the world’s oldest forests with giant ferns out of a fairy tale.
– Our price includes all park fees and tracking permit.

Itinerary

Day 1 Off to the Highlands

You will set out early leaving the Kampala and the Lake Victoria basin to drive up into the highlands to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. We prefer to call these highlands, the Gorilla Highlands because of their famous citizens—the mountain gorillas of Uganda.

The journey is long but there is a lot to keep you engaged. You will be driving from the northern hemisphere into the southern hemisphere as you cross the equator 80km (50miles) south of Kampala. The scenery is predominantly green rolling hills dotted with shambas (small farms)—many of which supply food to Kampala and other urban centres.

At about the half way point, in Mbarara City, you will stop for lunch. Mbarara is found in cattle country so look out for the Ankole long horn. From here we begin the much noticeable climb into the gorilla highlands and get to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park just in time for the sunset

Day 2 Tracking Gorillas

This is the day that only one who has experienced it can describe. Today you get intimate and close with a family of the endangered mountain gorillas of Uganda. The tracking begins with an orientation by the Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers. It is about the history of this ancient forest, the forest residents, tracking and interacting with the mountain gorilla family and everything else that makes this park a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Your one hour encounter will allow you see mothers nurse, baby gorillas play and move around as the family feeds. You are now officially one of the few in the whole world to have this intimate relationship with the mountain gorillas of Uganda.

Day 3Back to Kampala

After an early breakfast, set off early for the 8-9 hour drive from the gorilla highlands to Kampala. Enjoy the ride through rural communities waking up to a new day. Lunch in Mbarara, thereafter continuing on and crossing the equator from the southern to northern hemisphere. You will arrive in Kampala before dusk depending on the traffic.
