Give yourself a break and spend a day with humankind’s cousins the chimpanzees of Kibale National Park. Travel west out of Kampala and into the shadows of the Rwenzori Mountains, Africa’s highest mountain range. From there continue to Kibale Forest, a place with a high density of chimpanzees that some call it the “chimp capital”.

Day 1 – Travel west from Kampala through Fort Portal to Kibale National Park.
Day 2 – One day in the life of a chimp tribe in the Kibale National Park.
Day 3 – Explore the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, and the community. Travel back to Kampala.
Set off early from Kampala and go west through rolling hills, tea plantations and rural towns hanging on the highway. Lunch in Fort Portal before heading south. Enter the crater-lake fields to the west of Kibale forest. The crater lakes, which formed during the birth of the western Great Rift Valley. A community guide will take you around the crater lakes, and through the flora of the area. From there off to Kibale National Park where you will spend the night. Check in and prepare for next day chimp tracking.
Kibale National Park is most famous for having the highest concentration of primates in Eastern Africa. Your Uganda Wildlife Authority guide and tracking team will take you on a four to five hour experience as you search the forest for the chimps. Once you find the chimp group, you will spend a precious 1 hour with them. You will follow it around the forest as you get a peek into the chimps’ life and family interactions. Beyond the chimps you will also get to see and hear a host of birds, and other primates.
This morning you will take a tour of with a community guide through Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary. There is a life-changing story of how this wetland and other conservation areas moved the local community from being destroyers of their environment to fierce and proud protectors. This change allowed a dying ecosystem to come back to life, bringing benefits of education, healthcare and better livelihoods.
After the tour, hit the road for the journey back to the Kampala arriving by evening.
